Lazio said smaller suppliers need particular attention because they often have less capital. China exported more than 2.5 million electric cars in 2025.

Alliant senior vice president and former U.S. Rep. Rick Lazio called for incentives to help U.S. automakers and suppliers invest in robotics and advanced equipment, pointing to China’s electric-car output in 2025.

In a commentary published Saturday, Lazio argued that improving production efficiency and investing in factory equipment should be priorities. He said smaller suppliers need particular attention because they often have less capital. “The next auto race will be decided by which country can excel at both,” Lazio wrote.

Global electric-car production reached nearly 22 million in 2025, more than 25% above the previous year. China produced 16 million and exported more than 2.5 million, double its 2024 total. Electric models accounted for more than 35% of China’s car exports, compared with about 20% in 2024.

Adopting Japanese lean manufacturing methods across the Big Three took between 10 and 15 years.
