U.S. durable goods orders rose 1.8% in September from August, just below the 1.9% increase expected. August orders were revised to a 0.1% gain from a 0.1% decline.

Core durable goods orders increased 0.5%, below the 0.6% forecast, marking an 18th consecutive monthly increase. Nondefense capital goods orders excluding aircraft, a measure of business equipment spending, also rose 0.5%, compared with a 1.6% gain in August and expectations of about 0.7%.

Communications equipment includes telephone apparatus, broadcast and wireless equipment, and network gear such as routers, switches and fiber-optic equipment. The September figures extend August’s 17-month growth streak for core orders.

Shipments of core capital goods rose 1.2%, above expectations of about 0.8% and August’s 0.5% increase. Shipments feed into calculations of gross domestic product equipment investment.
