Stephen Messer Urges Companies to Keep AI Models Interchangeable
The Collective[i] and Intelligence.com co-founder argues that businesses should control the software and context around models while keeping their choices flexible.

Stephen Messer, co-founder of Collective[i] and Intelligence.com, argues that companies should be able to switch AI models while retaining control over the software that coordinates them and the information they use.
In an October essay, Messer summarized the approach this way: “Rent the model, own the harness, own your context.” An AI harness is software that orchestrates a model. The essay also promotes Collective[i]’s Telli Assistants.
Among 100 verified vice presidents and C-level executives surveyed at Global 2000 companies, 81% said their companies used at least three AI model families in testing or production. That was up from 68% less than a year earlier. The figures provide context for Messer’s argument about keeping model choices flexible.
