Dormant Bitcoin Whale Moves $8.7B After 14 Years, Sparking Market Speculation

A massive dormant Bitcoin whale has reemerged, transferring 80,000 BTC—valued at approximately $8.7 billion—in just four hours, according to on-chain analytics firm Lookonchain. The transactions, tracked by blockchain monitoring service Whale Alert, involved eight separate transfers of 10,000 BTC each. These are the first movements of this particular Bitcoin stash since 2011.

Originally acquired during Bitcoin’s early days—likely when BTC was priced under $4—each 10,000 BTC bundle is now worth over $1.08 billion. This means the unidentified whale has gained more than $8 billion in unrealized profit over the past 14.2 years.

Crypto intelligence firm Arkham identified the transfers as originating from a single entity, most likely an institutional holder. Arkham also revealed that the wallets receiving the Bitcoin were initially funded on either April 2 or May 4, 2011, and had remained inactive until July 4, 2025.
