Avalanche Treasury Co. (NASDAQ: AVAT) experienced a difficult start on the public market, with its stock price plunging approximately 38% to $1.85 during its first day of trading on Thursday.

The company entered the Nasdaq through a $675 million merger with Mountain Lake Acquisition Corp., a special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC). The merger was initially announced in October and marked a significant milestone for the Avalanche-focused firm.

Led by former Susquehanna and AllianceBernstein executive Bart Smith, Avalanche Treasury Co. aims to differentiate itself from traditional crypto treasury companies. Rather than simply holding Avalanche’s native token, AVAX, on its balance sheet, the company plans to operate as both a digital asset treasury and an active business within the Avalanche ecosystem.

According to Smith, AVAT’s strategy is centered on deploying capital in ways that create long-term value across the Avalanche network. He emphasized that the company’s vision extends beyond short-term token price movements and is instead focused on supporting the broader evolution of institutional finance through blockchain technology.

“Our Nasdaq listing provides investors with direct access to this infrastructure transformation at an early stage,” Smith said.

The company’s market debut comes at a challenging time for digital asset treasury stocks. These firms became increasingly popular as investors sought exposure to cryptocurrencies through publicly traded companies. However, weakening sentiment in the crypto market has reduced demand for such investment vehicles.

The pressure is particularly evident in Avalanche’s native cryptocurrency. AVAX is currently trading near $6.60 and has declined nearly 34% over the past month. The token also remains more than 95% below its all-time high recorded during the 2021 crypto bull market.

As AVAT begins trading on Nasdaq, investors will closely monitor whether the company’s ecosystem-driven business model can attract interest despite the ongoing weakness in AVAX and the broader cryptocurrency market. The coming trading sessions may determine whether Avalanche Treasury can distinguish itself from other crypto-focused treasury firms and build confidence among public market investors.
