Trump Media and Technology Group (DJT) is pulling back from parts of its cryptocurrency expansion, abandoning plans for a publicly traded company designed to accumulate Cronos (CRO) tokens as the digital asset treasury sector faces tougher market conditions.
Trump Media, Crypto.com and Yorkville Acquisition announced Friday that they had mutually agreed to terminate plans for Trump Media Group CRO Strategy. The companies pointed to prevailing market conditions and changing business and stakeholder priorities as reasons for ending the proposed venture.
The initiative, announced during last year's digital asset treasury boom, was intended to establish a publicly traded company that would acquire CRO, the native cryptocurrency of the Cronos blockchain. The company also planned to generate additional returns by staking its CRO holdings.
Trump Media had already deepened its exposure to Cronos through a broader Crypto.com partnership. In September 2025, the company purchased approximately $105 million worth of CRO, with the partnership also including plans to introduce token-based rewards across Trump Media products.
CRO dropped as much as 5% following news that the treasury venture had been scrapped.
The companies are also ending a separate arrangement that would have seen Crypto.com provide services for certain planned Yorkville America exchange-traded funds. Trump Media is reportedly reducing its plans to integrate Crypto.com-powered prediction markets directly into Truth Social as well.
Interim CEO Kevin McGurn said growing saturation in the digital asset treasury market contributed to the shift in strategy. Trump Media is now placing greater emphasis on its media operations, data licensing business and proposed merger with fusion-energy company TAE Technologies. The company aims to complete the TAE deal before the end of 2026.
The crypto pullback comes as the CLARITY Act remains stalled in Washington amid debate surrounding crypto regulation, ethics and potential conflicts of interest involving President Donald Trump and his family's digital asset ventures.
Despite scaling back some initiatives, Trump Media maintains significant Bitcoin exposure. Company filings showed it held 9,542 BTC at the end of the second quarter. Earlier this week, 2,628 BTC, valued at roughly $165 million, were transferred to addresses associated with Crypto.com.
