Zcash (ZEC) has surged above the $1,000 mark, extending a dramatic recovery that appeared unlikely just months ago. On September 4, the Zcash price climbed above $1,010, with ZEC gaining roughly 6% during the latest daily trading session.
The milestone marks a sharp turnaround for the privacy-focused cryptocurrency after it suffered heavy selling pressure in June following developers’ disclosure of a counterfeiting vulnerability. Rather than one clear catalyst, ZEC’s rebound appears to be supported by a combination of institutional interest, derivatives activity and growing demand for Zcash’s privacy features.
Institutional attention became particularly important during ZEC’s August rally. When the cryptocurrency broke above $800, Grayscale’s push to convert its existing Zcash investment product into a spot ETF helped strengthen market optimism.
Derivatives trading has also intensified. During the August 22 rally, Zcash futures open interest reportedly climbed to $1.76 billion, while 24-hour futures trading volume reached approximately $9.54 billion.
Short liquidations added further momentum as ZEC crossed $1,000. More than $34 million worth of bearish positions were reportedly liquidated, triggering forced buying that accelerated the move higher.
Fundamental developments are also supporting the Zcash rally. The network’s shielded supply has reportedly increased to around 4.86 million ZEC, suggesting stronger adoption of its privacy infrastructure. Meanwhile, the ongoing NU7 governance process has renewed attention on Zcash development, with coinholders voting on unresolved elements of the upcoming network upgrade ahead of a September 14 deadline.
However, technical indicators suggest ZEC may be becoming overheated. The price near $1,011 sits well above its closest major moving average around $743, while longer-term averages remain near $604, $571 and $486. The daily Relative Strength Index is also approaching 80, placing Zcash firmly near overbought territory.
The $1,000 level is now critical. Holding above it could support further ZEC price discovery, while a breakdown may bring the $900–$840 region into focus. A deeper correction toward $740 would still leave Zcash above its broader long-term trend structure.
