Coinbase appeared to receive a massive 5.5 billion XRP inflow on September 8, triggering speculation across the crypto market. However, blockchain explorer XRPScan quickly clarified that no major XRP purchase or transfer had occurred. Instead, the apparent surge resulted from previously unidentified Coinbase wallets being newly labeled.
The XRP Rich List Bot initially reported Coinbase holdings rising by 5,569,165,957 XRP, an extraordinary 4,870.7% increase within one hour. At almost the same time, the amount categorized under unknown wallets dropped by a similar figure. XRPScan confirmed at 10:35 UTC that the change represented wallet reclassification rather than an actual exchange inflow.
Following the update, recognized Coinbase XRP wallets hold approximately 5.684 billion XRP across 152 accounts, equivalent to about 5.684% of XRP's total supply. This places Coinbase third on the XRP rich list.
Ripple remains the largest identified holder with 35.70 billion XRP in escrow across 26 accounts. Upbit ranks second with roughly 6.416 billion XRP across 12 accounts, while Binance follows Coinbase with 2.608 billion XRP across 18 accounts.
Coinbase's unusually large number of wallets reflects its practice of regularly moving XRP into new addresses. Because identifying cold wallets involves manual analysis and inference, blockchain explorers may take time to associate new addresses with an exchange.
The clarification also challenges earlier claims that falling visible Coinbase XRP reserves signaled a potential supply shock. Labeled balances can decline even when the exchange's actual custody holdings remain substantial because funds may simply move to addresses that have not yet been identified.
Investors should therefore interpret Coinbase's 5.68 billion XRP balance primarily as exchange custody and customer inventory rather than evidence of a multibillion-token Coinbase purchase. The figure also represents native XRP Ledger holdings and should not be confused with Coinbase's wrapped XRP product, cbXRP, on Base.
For XRP price, the labeling update has limited direct significance. It provides greater transparency about where existing tokens are held but creates no new buying demand or change to Ripple's escrow schedule.
