Coinbase stock (COIN) surged Monday, September 14, as investors positioned for a major week of U.S. monetary policy and crypto regulation. COIN traded at $185.91 at 9:44 a.m. EDT, up $10.65, or 6.08%, from Friday’s $175.26 close.
Coinbase shares briefly approached $188 after the opening bell before trimming gains. Premarket trading had largely ranged between $175 and $181, making $188 an important near-term resistance level.
Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve’s September meeting. The Fed is scheduled to announce its interest-rate decision on September 16 alongside updated economic projections. FedWatch data showed markets pricing an 88.3% probability of a 25-basis-point rate increase, compared with an 11.7% chance of no change.
The Fed kept its target range at 3.50%–3.75% in July. A quarter-point hike would raise rates to 3.75%–4.00%, potentially influencing risk assets, including Bitcoin, cryptocurrencies and COIN stock.
Crypto regulation is another key catalyst. A Senate cloture motion involving the CLARITY Act is set to ripen Tuesday afternoon. The procedural vote could determine whether debate advances on legislation establishing a clearer U.S. digital asset market framework. However, 18 state attorneys general, led by New York Attorney General Letitia James, have urged Congress to oppose the current version, warning about potential risks to investor protections.
Global central banks will add further volatility. The Bank of England announces its decision on September 17, while the Bank of Japan’s policy statement is expected September 18. A BOJ rate hike could strengthen the yen and pressure yen-funded carry trades.
For Coinbase stock, $188 remains the immediate resistance area. A sustained breakout could put $190 and then $195 in focus. From $185.91, COIN would need to gain roughly another 7.6% to reach $200.
On the downside, $180 represents nearby support. A break below that level could bring Friday’s $175.26 closing price back into focus as investors assess Fed policy, the CLARITY Act and broader crypto market momentum.
