Bitcoin (BTC) futures open interest increased by nearly 9,000 BTC over 24 hours as a buying-pressure indicator reached its highest reading since Aug. 19, pointing to renewed position-building in the market.

The indicator rose to 4.9. It weights changes in open interest to gauge the balance between buying and selling, and the reading means pressure accumulated over 12 hours was nearly five standard deviations above the average for the prior week.

The surge may reflect new long positions, short positions being closed, or both. Long positions generally benefit from rising prices, while short positions benefit from declines.

BTC holding above $85,000 as upward momentum fades would indicate the advance may continue. A drop below $83,000 is the main risk identified for recently opened long positions, with liquidations potentially accelerating a decline.
