The revised July rate was 4.6% as spending rose faster than disposable income. The data does not establish Bitcoin’s effectiveness during financial stress.

The U.S. personal saving rate fell to 4.1% in August as spending outpaced income growth, reducing the share of current income households retained and limiting Bitcoin’s short-term hedge case.

The revised series puts the July saving rate at 4.6%. Disposable personal income increased $68.6 billion, or 0.3%, while current-dollar personal consumption expenditures rose $190.8 billion, or 0.9%.

Personal saving totaled $990.2 billion. Real personal consumption expenditures increased $92.8 billion, or 0.6%, from July.

The personal consumption expenditures price index rose 0.3% in August from the previous month and 3.4% from August 2025. The core index, which excludes food and energy, increased 0.2% month over month and 3% year over year.

The figures distinguish Bitcoin’s potential role as a long-term portfolio asset from its use as a short-term financial buffer. A lower saving rate shows that households retained a smaller share of disposable income, but it does not explain why the change occurred, how savings are distributed or whether Bitcoin reduced financial stress.

A hedge assessment also depends on the period being protected. Evidence on performance, volatility and correlation during that period would be needed to determine whether Bitcoin offset losses or preserved purchasing power.

The revised historical series is important for future comparisons because the annual update to the national economic accounts included revisions beginning in January 2021.

The August figures were released Sept. 30 at 8:30 a.m. ET (12:30 p.m. UTC).
