A U.S. government-linked wallet transferred 12,267 Bitcoin (BTC) worth about $1.01 billion on Oct. 8, moving assets recovered from the 2016 Bitfinex hack into two newly created, unlabeled wallets.

The transaction occurred at about 9:33 a.m. ET (13:33 UTC). Roughly 6,000 BTC went to one address, while about 6,267 BTC moved to another.

The funds were tied to Bitcoin recovered after 119,754 BTC was stolen in the 2016 hack of Bitfinex. The specific federal agency controlling the wallet and the purpose of the transfer were not publicly confirmed.

Separately, government-linked wallets moved 9,261 BTC worth about $770 million to Coinbase Prime between Oct. 6 and Oct. 7. Coinbase Prime provides custody services, so deposits there do not by themselves establish that the assets were sold.

Executive Order 14233 established a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve for Bitcoin finally forfeited to the federal government and requires a full accounting of government digital-asset holdings.
