Total cryptocurrency market capitalization has entered the historical timing window associated with cycle bottoms, but the July low remains unconfirmed because market capitulation has been limited and trend signals have appeared faster than in earlier cycles.

The market is now 11.9 months past its cycle peak, placing it within the 11- to 13-month period in which the previous three completed cycles reached their lows. The current cycle’s low arrived in July, 8.8 months after the peak, and total market capitalization has since rebounded 44%.

A move below the July low would bring the historical cycle timetable back into focus. The timing alone, however, does not confirm that the low was the cycle bottom.

Bitcoin (BTC) also has not recorded the same degree of holder losses seen during previous market bottoms. Net Unrealized Profit/Loss, or NUPL, reached 0.09 during this cycle, compared with negative 0.43 in 2018 and negative 0.31 in 2022.

The figures indicate that holders have not experienced the deep losses and capitulation seen in earlier cycles. NUPL measures whether the market’s unrealized gains or losses are positive or negative, making it a gauge of the pressure held by investors.

Trend signals have also developed more quickly. A golden cross, in which the 50-day moving average rises above the 200-day average, appeared 2.3 months after the July low. Bitcoin reclaimed its 50-week moving average in less than three months, faster than in previous cycles.

The faster signals may reflect a compressed market cycle. They may also be less informative, prompting a reassessment of indicators calibrated to earlier cycles.
