U.S. margin-account debit balances reached $1.502 trillion on June 30, 2026, raising the potential for forced selling if the value of securities used as collateral declines.

The aggregate figure covers customers of Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) member firms. It does not isolate retail investors or show whether changes came from new borrowing, portfolio values or obligations tied to short positions.

Margin investing allows customers to borrow from brokers using assets in their accounts as collateral. If those assets lose enough value, brokers can require additional funds or liquidate positions.

Robinhood’s margin book reached $21.6 billion at the end of the second quarter of 2026, up 127% from a year earlier. The company had 28.4 million funded customers and $369 billion in total platform assets at the end of the quarter.

Robinhood’s margin balance declined to $20.7 billion at the end of July before rising to $21.5 billion at the end of August. The company-specific figures cover its customer margin balances and are not directly interchangeable with the broader industry total.

The risks of concentrated margin use were illustrated by Hy Luu, 29, who said he exercised five Tesla call options and bought 500 shares at $330 each. After accounting for cash in his account, his borrowing rose above $156,000.

Luu said he later refinanced his mother’s Houston home to obtain another $30,000, which he used to reduce margin debt during Tesla’s 2022 decline.

“What I’m doing is risky. I don’t recommend anyone do it,” Luu said. He also described his early borrowing by saying, “I went really crazy.”

Robinhood Chairman and CEO Vlad Tenev said, “Broad ownership is essential to a free, stable, and prosperous society.”
