Vladimir Putin told President Donald Trump that Russia cannot currently resume negotiations with Ukraine, adding to geopolitical risk monitored by global and crypto markets.

Kremlin aide Ushakov said Putin blamed Ukraine’s position for undermining an immediate return to talks. Putin also accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt Russia’s State Duma election and carry out attacks against civilians.

Putin said efforts to halt Russia’s military advance would not succeed and that Russian forces retained the initiative on the battlefield. Those claims were part of the message Trump received during the call.

Trump directed the information from the conversation to the Ukrainian delegation. The two sides did not specifically discuss a bilateral meeting between Putin and Trump, Ushakov said.

The call took place as the prospect of renewed negotiations remained central to the Russia-Ukraine conflict and its potential impact on global markets.
