Wall Street liquidity radar: Coinbase premium at -0.116% as Prime volume jumps
U.S. bitcoin spot traded at a discount, with the Coinbase premium at -0.116%. Coinbase Prime volume rose 31.5%, but CME positioning and macro gauges still point to cautious demand.

U.S. spot bitcoin continued to trade below offshore markets. Institutional venue activity increased, but the price signal has not yet turned to a clear buying premium.
As of Oct. 12 at 11:04 UTC, the Coinbase premium stood at -0.116%. The series moved from -0.0754% on Oct. 8 to -0.1099% on Oct. 9, narrowed to -0.0935% on Oct. 10, then fell again to -0.1132% on Oct. 11 and -0.1017% on Oct. 12.
A negative reading means U.S. bitcoin spot prices are cheaper than offshore prices. The discount suggests U.S.-side buying pressure remains weak.
Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 2,134.62 BTC in volume on Oct. 11, up 31.5% from 1,623.19 BTC on Oct. 10. Its 24-hour dollar volume was about $395.6 million.
Prime is closer to where institutional investors trade directly. The sharp volume increase points to renewed institutional activity, but the negative premium makes it difficult to call the flow aggressive buying.
CME bitcoin futures leveraged fund positioning, reported weekly by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, showed 5,731 long contracts and 12,583 short contracts as of Oct. 6. Shorts were about 2.2 times longs, leaving positioning tilted to the downside.
The VIX, a gauge of U.S. equity-market volatility, stood at 15.48 on Oct. 12, up 0.64 from 14.84 on Oct. 9. Recent readings moved from 15.52 on Oct. 5 to 15.01 on Oct. 6, 15.08 on Oct. 7, 15.41 on Oct. 8, 14.84 on Oct. 9 and 15.48 on Oct. 12.
The VIX is used to track how anxious U.S. equity markets are. A level below 20 is generally treated as a calmer zone, so equity-market stress is not the main driver of crypto selling pressure for now.
The dollar index was 102.40 on Oct. 12, up 0.19 from 102.21 on Oct. 9. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was 5.22% as of Oct. 8. A stronger dollar or higher yields can weigh on risk assets such as bitcoin.
The U.S. market is showing heavier institutional trading, while spot prices still lean cheaper than offshore markets. The next signal to watch is whether the Coinbase premium narrows its discount and whether the rise in Prime activity translates into actual buying strength.
Editor’s note: Wall Street liquidity radar reads how U.S. investors are positioned on bitcoin through four indicators: CME leveraged fund positioning, the Coinbase premium, the VIX volatility index and Coinbase Prime trading volume. It is intended as a reference for short-term market flow and broader risk appetite.
