Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Shows Diverging Signals Across Exchanges
The index showed a 0.056% discount against Binance on Oct. 7 and a 0.1332% discount against Binance and OKX on Oct. 12, while another comparison showed near parity.

Bitcoin (BTC) demand signals varied across exchange comparisons in October, with Coinbase showing a discount against Binance and OKX but near parity with other dollar-based venues.
The Coinbase Premium Index stood at -0.056% against Binance on Oct. 7. On Oct. 12, Coinbase traded at a 0.1332% discount against Binance and OKX.
A separate comparison on Oct. 12 showed Coinbase at a 0.0013% premium against other dollar-based exchanges. The differing results underscore how the choice of comparison venues and trading pairs can change the reading.
The index measures the percentage difference between Bitcoin’s price on Coinbase and prices on another exchange. A negative reading means Bitcoin is trading at a lower price on Coinbase than on the comparison venue.
The measure is often used as a proxy for U.S.-linked spot demand, but it does not directly track total U.S. buying or selling. Liquidity, currency pairs and the timing of each comparison can also affect the result.
The October figures do not point to a uniform result across venues.
That distinction matters when interpreting the index as a market-demand signal. A single negative reading may describe relative pricing between exchanges without establishing broad selling pressure among U.S. investors.
