Wall Street liquidity radar: U.S. bitcoin discount deepens as prime volume jumps 122%
U.S. bitcoin spot prices traded at a deeper discount, while Coinbase Prime volume rose 122.0% to 4,737.90 BTC. CME leveraged funds remained net short, and VIX stayed below 20.

U.S. spot bitcoin traded at a deeper discount to offshore markets, even as institutional trading through Coinbase Prime rose sharply. Price sentiment and actual execution remained split, leaving the market short of a clear directional signal.
Coinbase premium moved from -0.1099% on Oct. 9 to -0.0935% on Oct. 10, then to -0.1132% on Oct. 11, -0.1313% on Oct. 12 and -0.2236% on Oct. 13.
A positive Coinbase premium indicates U.S. investors are paying more than offshore buyers, while a negative reading means U.S. spot prices are cheaper. The premium stayed negative for the latest five readings, and the discount widened, pointing to weaker U.S. spot buying appetite.
Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 4,737.90 BTC in daily volume on Oct. 12, up from 2,134.62 BTC on Oct. 11. That was a 122.0% increase, with 24-hour volume at about $395.32 million.

Because Prime is used by institutional clients, the increase points to a pickup in actual institutional activity. U.S. spot prices remained discounted, but the jump in executed volume makes the move harder to read as simple sidelined demand.
CME bitcoin futures positioning for leveraged funds, disclosed weekly by the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission, showed 5,731 long contracts and 12,583 short contracts as of Oct. 6. Shorts were about 2.2 times longs, leaving positioning tilted to the downside.
The VIX, a gauge of U.S. equity-market volatility, stood at 15.44 on Oct. 13, up 0.23 from 15.21 on Oct. 12. Recent readings were 15.01 on Oct. 6, 15.08 on Oct. 7, 15.41 on Oct. 8, 14.84 on Oct. 9, 15.21 on Oct. 12 and 15.44 on Oct. 13.
The VIX is generally read as a measure of how unsettled U.S. equities are. A reading below 20 suggests broader equity fear is still contained, though the day-on-day rise added a more cautious backdrop for crypto assets.

The dollar index stood at 102.29 on Oct. 13, down 0.29 from 102.58 on Oct. 12. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield was 5.22% as of Oct. 8.
A stronger dollar or higher yields can weigh on risk assets. The dollar eased on the day, reducing one source of pressure, but the level of rates remained high enough to act as a constraint on crypto liquidity.
U.S. market signals still lean weak on spot-price demand. The next points to watch are whether the Coinbase premium moves out of discount and whether the increase in Coinbase Prime volume continues.
Editor’s note: Wall Street liquidity radar tracks four indicators to read how U.S. investors are approaching bitcoin: leveraged fund positioning in CME futures, the Coinbase premium, the VIX volatility index and trading volume through Coinbase Prime.
