Bitcoin Exchange Reserves Remain 1.7% Below September Levels
Whale holdings stayed above 3 million BTC as prices fell in early October, while apparent demand recovered toward neutral this week.

Bitcoin exchange reserves remain below mid-September levels, while whale holdings have stayed above 3 million BTC through an early October price decline, offering context for the debate over Bitcoin’s typical October strength.
The amount of Bitcoin (BTC) held on exchanges fell from 2.726 million BTC on Sept. 20 to 2.68 million as of Tuesday, a 1.7% decrease. Reserves rose modestly over the past week but remained below the September figure.
Whale holdings also remained above 3 million BTC as Bitcoin’s price fell from $87,000 on Oct. 2 to near $80,000 on Oct. 8. The figures describe holdings and exchange balances; they do not establish whether Bitcoin has reached a durable price bottom.
An apparent-demand measure compares newly mined Bitcoin with changes in dormant supply. It remained negative throughout 2026 apart from a brief period of positive 30-day readings in the second half of August. After returning to negative territory, the measure recovered toward neutral this week.
The on-chain signals leave open the possibility that Bitcoin could finish October strongly, in line with its historical pattern. That pattern does not mean gains will be uninterrupted, and the indicators do not confirm future performance.
Confirmation of a recovery would require sustained exchange-traded fund inflows, stronger U.S. spot buying and continued improvement in demand. These conditions have not been established by the reserve and holdings figures alone. The indicators add to the context around the pressure on Bitcoin’s “Uptober” narrative.
