Bitcoin Lump-Sum Buys Accumulated More Coins in About 68% of Historical Windows
Two backtests compared investing $12,000 at once with 12 monthly purchases. In the weakest 5% of one test’s windows, the lump-sum strategy finished with 44.3% less BTC.

Two historical Bitcoin comparisons found that investing $12,000 at once accumulated more Bitcoin (BTC) than spreading the sum across 12 monthly purchases in roughly 68% of tested windows, while leaving a sizable downside in the weakest periods.
The first model compared an immediate $12,000 purchase with 12 monthly purchases of $1,000 across 571 start dates. Using daily Bitcoin prices from Sept. 17, 2014, through Aug. 26, 2026, it found the immediate purchase accumulated more BTC in 68.3% of windows. Its median advantage was 24.4%, but in the worst 5% of windows, the lump-sum strategy ended with 44.3% less BTC than the monthly plan. The calculation excluded fees, spreads and taxes.
A separate backtest examined 182 monthly start windows from Sept. 1, 2010, through Oct. 1, 2025. The immediate purchase accumulated more BTC in 68.7% of those windows, with a median advantage of 29.7%. That test assumed zero fees and noted that its monthly windows overlap.
The two results are similar but come from different price histories and methods, so they are not identical tests. Both measure how much BTC the strategies accumulated in past windows; neither establishes the odds for a future investment. The weaker results in the first test also show that the overall pattern did not hold in every starting period.
Dollar-cost averaging means investing a fixed amount on a regular schedule, regardless of price. With a fixed-dollar purchase, the same amount buys more BTC when prices are lower and less when they are higher. Spreading purchases over time can reduce the effect of a single entry date, but it does not prevent losses or guarantee a better result. Repeated trades can also add fees, which the backtests did not include.
These comparisons apply to someone who already has $12,000 in cash and is deciding whether to invest it at once or over time. Investing new income as it arrives is different because the full amount is not already waiting to be invested. Historically, lump-sum buying accumulated more BTC in most of the tested windows, but the results also include periods when monthly buying did better.
