U.S. producer prices rose 6.3% year over year in September, above expectations, while initial jobless claims totaled 199,000 for the week ended Oct. 10, offering investors a mixed inflation and labor snapshot.

The September producer price index (PPI) annual rate was projected at 5.3%. The reported 6.3% reading exceeded that estimate by 1 percentage point. The previous annual rate was revised to 5.6% from 5.4%, putting the latest figure 0.7 percentage point above the revised level.

Initial claims came in 1,000 below the 200,000 estimate. The 199,000 total applies to the week ended Oct. 10.

The two readings delivered contrasting surprises: an inflation measure ran one percentage point above its estimate, while new claims were 1,000 below theirs. The contrast gives investors a current read on U.S. inflation and employment conditions, including participants in crypto markets.

The snapshot spans two distinct windows—September for PPI and the week through Oct. 10 for claims—giving crypto-market participants separate readings on inflation and labor.
