The average U.S. rate for a 30-year fixed mortgage was 7.40% on Oct. 15, unchanged from the prior week and above its level a year earlier. Affordability challenges and dampened demand persisted.

The rate stood at 6.27% during the same period last year. The latest reading follows an earlier mortgage-rate update.
