U.S. Becomes Net Bitcoin (BTC) Importer as Stablecoins Find New Uses Abroad
The shift was the first since 2022. New stablecoin uses, especially abroad, benefited U.S. companies and the government alongside billions of dollars in economic activity.

The United States became a net importer of Bitcoin (BTC) in 2026 for the first time since 2022, as institutions bought while retail holders largely sold.
The U.S. share of global Bitcoin activity increased in every reporting period after spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds launched in January 2024. These funds give investors exposure through shares, while the funds handle Bitcoin purchases and sales.
The U.S. crypto economy was valued at $2.78 trillion in 2026 and contracted 2.2%, while retaining most of the near doubling recorded in 2025.
Dollar-pegged stablecoins also found new uses, particularly abroad. Those uses benefited U.S. companies and the government alongside billions of dollars in economic activity. The tokens give people a way to hold dollars without an account at an American bank.
