Bitcoin faced fresh macro pressure after the annual U.S. CPI rate exceeded expectations and retail sales beat estimates, while global digital asset investment products saw $434 million in outflows so far that week as of Oct. 16.

September’s CPI rose 3.7% from a year earlier, above the 3.6% forecast for the annual rate, and climbed 0.6% from August. Core CPI increased 0.3% month over month. Retail sales rose 0.8%, compared with an estimate of roughly 0.3%.

The releases prompted markets to reassess the Federal Reserve’s interest-rate path. In an Oct. 15 snapshot, expectations for the Fed to keep rates unchanged in October stood near 75%, while expectations for another hike before year-end had increased.

Bitcoin’s short-term environment remains difficult, but the figures do not establish a fundamentally bearish outlook. Trading may remain range-bound and driven by economic releases in the coming weeks as markets look for further evidence of cooling inflation or weaker economic activity.
