Physical supply concerns persist as silver demand shifts from solar power toward data centers, electric vehicles and grid upgrades.

Gold and silver prices have plunged from January 2026 highs, but Q2 central-bank gold buying and a projected silver shortfall point to persistent pressure in physical markets.

Spot gold and silver prices have fallen sharply from their January 2026 highs.

Central banks bought 288.9 metric tons of gold in Q2 2026, a record for the period and 62% more than a year earlier. The silver market is projected to run a 46.3 million-ounce deficit in 2026, marking its sixth consecutive annual shortfall.

Silver demand is shifting. Use in solar power is expected to keep declining, while demand from data centers, electric vehicles and grid upgrades may offset part of that drop. Long mine-development timelines can slow the response of new supply to changing demand.

The pullback may reflect speculative positions unwinding rather than a resolution of physical supply imbalances. U.S. fiscal deficits, rising interest costs and central-bank reserve diversification remain factors in gold's longer-term outlook. Changes in trade policy, weaker industrial demand or new mining capacity could alter the outlook.
