Fuel oil prices rose sharply in September, adding to inflation and raising pressure on New England households as winter heating season approaches, with the fuel up 74.2% from a year earlier.

Prices climbed 15.3% from August to September. Higher gasoline and fuel oil prices also contributed to inflation during the month.

A previous winter spending estimate projected that U.S. households primarily using heating oil would spend $2,115 from November through March, up 21% from the prior winter. The estimate put the average winter price at $5.26 per gallon, a 34% increase.
