Editor’s note Options are derivatives used to gain leveraged exposure to price movements or hedge existing positions. A call grants the right to buy an underlying asset at a predetermined price, while a put grants the right to sell. Open interest measures the total number of options contracts that remain outstanding.
Call and put shares, alongside changes in open interest and volume, can help distinguish longer-term positioning from shorter-term trading. Rising open interest can signal new position formation, while differences between open-interest and volume composition may reflect hedging or volatility-related demand.
