AI-linked technology shares face bubble concerns, with concentrated market leadership, borrowing for AI investment and ambitious profit expectations adding to scrutiny.

Forward earnings measure a stock’s valuation against estimates of future profits. That measure is only one part of the debate over whether AI-related shares are in a bubble.

Some long-term valuation measures remain elevated. Market leadership is concentrated, leaving the rally exposed to the performance of its leading companies. These factors mean forward earnings alone cannot capture all the risks facing AI-related stocks.

Financing and profit expectations add to the uncertainty. Companies are borrowing to fund AI investment, while expectations for future earnings are ambitious. The scale of spending raises a basic question: Will AI-related profits be large enough to support continued investment?

The technology could succeed and still disappoint shareholders if profits do not meet expectations. A successful shift in technology does not by itself ensure that the financial returns match what investors anticipate.

Credit-market disruptions could put pressure on related stocks, as could a slowdown in spending on AI infrastructure.
