The 39th anniversary of Black Monday falls Monday, Oct. 19, after a weaker Friday session for U.S. stock benchmarks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 508 points, or 22.6%, in one session on Oct. 19, 1987, a market break that led to new trading safeguards.

By October 1988, circuit-breaker procedures were operating in U.S. securities and futures markets, shaped by the 1987 crash and Brady Report proposals. The current market-wide rules use declines in the S&P 500 from its previous close to set three thresholds. In 1987, portfolio insurers’ use of options and derivatives added to selling pressure.

The S&P 500 ended Friday, Oct. 16, at 7,659.44, down 1.09%, at 4 p.m. ET (20:00 UTC). The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26,140.03, a decline of 564.31 points. Those were the final U.S. stock-market closing figures before the anniversary.

Other economic figures in the backdrop include oil prices and inflation. December 2026 Brent crude futures were last quoted at $109.95 a barrel at 5:59 p.m. ET Friday (21:59 UTC). September consumer prices rose 0.6% from August on a seasonally adjusted basis and 3.7% from a year earlier on an unadjusted basis.

The Federal Reserve’s target range for its benchmark interest rate is 3.75% to 4%, following a quarter-point increase that took effect Sept. 17. The rate and inflation figures offer economic context for the anniversary, while the circuit breakers describe how trading pauses are handled during a steep market decline.

If the S&P 500 falls 7% or 13% from its previous close before 3:25 p.m. ET, trading pauses for 15 minutes. Reaching either of those levels at or after 3:25 p.m. ET does not trigger a halt. A 20% decline from the previous close halts trading for the rest of the day. The anniversary recalls the crash and the safeguards adopted afterward; it does not by itself establish that another collapse is approaching.
