U.S. bitcoin buying sentiment remained weak as the Coinbase premium stayed negative, even as institutional trading increased sharply.

U.S. spot prices continued to trade below offshore levels, while activity through an institutional trading venue climbed. The narrower discount indicated some improvement, but the premium remained below zero.

As of Oct. 19, the Coinbase premium stood at -0.076%. Daily readings were -0.1417% on Oct. 14, -0.1392% on Oct. 15, -0.1416% on Oct. 16, -0.1385% on Oct. 17, -0.1329% on Oct. 18 and -0.0843% on Oct. 19.

A negative premium means bitcoin is trading more cheaply on Coinbase than on Binance. Although the discount narrowed, the sustained negative readings pointed to subdued U.S. spot demand.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded volume of 2,960.04 BTC on Oct. 18, up from 1,900.38 BTC on Oct. 17. Its 24-hour volume was about $390.10 million, based on 4,740.91 BTC at a bitcoin price of $82,254.81.

The increase showed stronger institutional activity, but volume alone does not establish whether buying or selling dominated.

CME bitcoin futures positioning among leveraged funds showed 5,520 long contracts and 11,364 short contracts as of Oct. 13, according to weekly CFTC data. Short positions exceeded longs, indicating a defensive tilt.

The U.S. Dollar Index slipped to 101.81 on Oct. 19 from 101.84 on Oct. 16. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.10% on Oct. 15. A softer dollar may ease some pressure on risk assets, while elevated yields remain a potential headwind for crypto and equities.

Institutional trading strengthened, but U.S. bitcoin spot demand remained soft. Whether the Coinbase premium can return above zero will be a key signal for a broader recovery in U.S. buying appetite.
