Bitcoin (BTC) Transfers Under 0.01 BTC Account for Nearly 80% of Transactions

The count-based figure does not measure the amount of Bitcoin moved or show how often transfers paid for purchases.

Transfers of less than 0.01 Bitcoin (BTC) account for nearly 80% of Bitcoin transactions, making small transfers prominent in network activity without showing how often BTC is spent on purchases.

The figure measures the number of transactions below the 0.01 BTC threshold. It does not mean those transactions carried nearly 80% of the Bitcoin moved across the network. A transfer below the threshold counts once regardless of its exact size, just as a larger transfer counts once in the overall transaction total.

Transaction size also does not identify a transfer’s purpose. The large share of small transfers therefore cannot, on its own, establish that more people are using Bitcoin to pay for goods or services. Nor does the share alone demonstrate a change over time: that would require an earlier transaction count measured on the same basis.

The figure describes how transactions are distributed by size. Assessing Bitcoin’s use for payments requires a measure of what those transfers were for.
