The Nasdaq Composite gave up an afternoon gain and finished lower Tuesday as declines in large technology shares left it trailing the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500.

At the 4 p.m. ET (20:00 UTC) close on Oct. 20, the Nasdaq stood at 26,424.82, down 6.07 points from Monday. It had been up 0.25% at 12:40 p.m. ET (16:40 UTC) before turning lower later in the session.

The Dow gained 529.85 points to close at 52,495.88. The S&P 500's Oct. 20 gain was 21.84 points, bringing it to 7,712.57. Both indexes advanced while large technology shares weighed on the Nasdaq.

At 12:40 p.m. ET (16:40 UTC), Bitcoin (BTC) was near $82,500, a 0.7% increase over 24 hours. That price was recorded before the stock market closed and before the Nasdaq's afternoon gain had turned into a loss.
