[Wall Street liquidity radar] US Bitcoin demand shows signs of recovery as price discount persists
Bitcoin's US price discount narrowed in the recent series as Coinbase Prime volume rose 10.2%. The latest premium remained negative, while CME leveraged funds held more shorts than longs.

A narrowing US Bitcoin price discount and higher institutional trading volume point to improving buying sentiment. US prices remain below overseas levels, however, leaving the evidence of stronger demand mixed.
The recent premium series shows the price gap steadily closing. Activity through Coinbase Prime also increased, adding evidence of greater institutional participation without establishing whether buyers or sellers drove the trading.
The Coinbase premium series moved from -0.14% on October 17 to -0.13% on October 18, -0.12% on October 19 and -0.11% on October 20. It stood at -0.11% on October 21. A separate, latest snapshot on October 21 put the premium at -0.13%, based on Coinbase and Binance prices.
A positive premium indicates a higher US price relative to the overseas benchmark; a negative reading indicates a discount. The narrowing discount in the series suggests weaker relative US buying pressure has eased, although the latest snapshot remains negative.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 5,283.87 BTC in trading volume on October 20, up 10.2% from 4,792.89 BTC on October 19.
The volume measures completed trades through the institutional venue and provides a gauge of participation. It includes both purchases and sales, so the increase alone does not establish that institutions accumulated Bitcoin.
CME leveraged funds held 5,520 long contracts and 11,364 short contracts as of October 13, according to the CFTC's weekly disclosures. Shorts were about 2.1 times longs, leaving the reported positioning tilted toward the downside.
The weekly reporting schedule means those futures positions predate the latest spot premium and currency readings. They provide context for institutional positioning rather than a contemporaneous measure of demand.

No VIX reading was available in the supplied data, leaving the US equity volatility component of the sentiment assessment unavailable.
The dollar index fell to 101.68 on October 21 from 101.73 the previous day, a decline of 0.05%. The US 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.15% as of October 19. The softer dollar accompanied the improvement in the premium series, while the Treasury yield remained part of the broader financial backdrop.
Together, the narrowing discount and increased institutional turnover suggest US Bitcoin sentiment is recovering from weakness. Whether US spot prices move above the overseas benchmark, alongside sustained institutional activity, remains the key distinction between easing weakness and clearer buying strength.

These indicators bring together futures positioning, relative spot pricing, equity-market uncertainty and institutional trading activity.
