South Korea's KOSPI rose 4.7% and crossed 5,800 during Wednesday's trading before its gains narrowed. Samsung Electronics and SK hynix also posted gains during the session.

Samsung Electronics was up 7.4% and SK hynix gained 8.2% during the intraday move. Both stocks outpaced the broader index at that point. The 5,800 crossing was an intraday level, with trading still underway and the closing result yet to be set.

The KOSPI finished 3.29% higher, below 5,800. Samsung Electronics closed up 5.67%, while SK hynix ended 5.8% higher. The index's closing gain was 1.41 percentage points smaller than its reported 4.7% intraday rise, and both chipmakers also gave back part of their earlier advances.

The distinction matters for the session's final result: the KOSPI reached 5,800 during trading but did not hold that level through the close. It nevertheless finished the day higher, alongside gains in both chip stocks.
