Bitcoin ETF demand recovers as $84,400 breakout hinges on sustained inflows

Bitcoin is holding its range as ETF demand recovers. Bitfinex says sustained inflows and stable leverage are key to clearing $84,400, while a close below $81,300 would increase downside risk.

Bitcoin has held the bottom of its trading range despite repeated attempts to push prices lower. Recovering spot demand through ETFs has supported the market, while profit-taking by short-term traders could limit an initial advance toward the upper boundary.

In its “Bitcoin Eyes $84,400 as ETF Demand Returns” report published on October 21, 2026, Bitfinex said bitcoin remained in an $81,300–$84,400 range ahead of the October 28 Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) rate decision. The report identified persistent ETF demand, a shift toward higher acquisition costs and renewed leveraged positioning as the main market developments.

Net ETF inflows reached $526.7 million on October 19, marking a recovery in spot demand. Despite steady buying on dips, bitcoin traded within a narrow $81,724–$83,470 range, below the ETF investor cohort’s average cost basis of $84,333.

Futures positions recover as institutional exposure holds steady

Futures open interest across major exchanges rose 4.2% from its October 12 low to 645,410 BTC by October 20. Bitfinex interpreted the increase as new long positions rather than a broader structural change. Funding rates returned to annualized levels of 7–9% during peak sessions, indicating a moderate bias toward leveraged longs. The report said similar conditions had proved sustainable during healthy bitcoin uptrends.

Open interest on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) remained stable at approximately 112,000 BTC, or about 17% of the total. Bitfinex said this indicated steady institutional exposure without aggressive expansion or contraction.

Options positioning turns defensive ahead of the rate decision

The October 23 options expiry carries $1.23 billion in notional open interest, with a maximum pain price—the level associated with the greatest losses for option buyers—near $82,000. Implied volatility points to an $80,750–$84,650 range into the weekend. Bitfinex said positive gamma around both boundaries could prompt option sellers and dealers to sell above the upper end and buy below the lower end.

The October 30 monthly expiry totals $11.2 billion in notional value across platforms, with maximum pain at $76,000. Its implied one-standard-deviation range spans $78,300–$87,100, reflecting hedging against potential volatility around the October 28 FOMC announcement, according to the report.

Higher acquisition costs point to a rising support base

On-chain supply distribution shows bitcoin moving into higher cost-basis bands. The $80,353 band lost 62,000 BTC, while the $82,224 band gained 145,000 BTC. Bitfinex said this suggested coins bought during dips below $81,300 were moving into higher support clusters between $82,200 and $83,200.

The short-term holder spent output profit ratio, or STH-SOPR, stood near 1.003, indicating modest profit-taking among recent buyers. Supply in profit was 70%, below the long-term baseline of 75%. The report associated this pattern with sustained bull-market advances.

Continued ETF inflows and technology stocks remain key

BlackRock’s IBIT led ETF demand on October 19 with $665.2 million in inflows. Total net ETF inflows slowed to $23.2 million on October 20. Bitfinex identified consecutive sessions of institutional inflows as a key condition for clearing resistance at $84,000.

The report also highlighted the continuing correlation between digital assets and equities, particularly technology and AI-focused stocks. Quarterly earnings and inflation data would provide further context for risk sentiment ahead of the October 28 Federal Reserve policy announcement.

Watching $84,400 resistance and $81,300 support

Bitfinex’s baseline scenario kept bitcoin within $81,300–$84,400 ahead of the FOMC meeting. It said sustained ETF demand and stable leverage would support a break above $84,400. Conversely, macroeconomic pressure combined with a close below $81,300 would increase the risk of a move toward the October 15 low of $79,821.

The report identified three readings to monitor before Friday’s options settlement. The first was ETF flows on Wednesday and Thursday: another session comparable with Monday’s inflow was needed to confirm demand. The second was the open-interest-weighted funding rate. Bitfinex said a move to $84,400 with funding at 9% would repeat the positioning setup that unwound on October 8 and October 15.

The third was supply movement in the $80,353 and $82,224 cost-basis bands. Bitfinex described the transfer of coins from dip buyers to new buyers as a mechanism that could raise the market’s floor without lifting its ceiling.
