Bitcoin Nears $83,500 As Crypto Futures Volume Rises 19%
Rolling 24-hour futures volume reached $190 billion as open interest climbed nearly 4% to $145 billion. Taker activity showed a modest tilt toward longs.

Bitcoin (BTC) touched a seven-day high near $83,500 on Oct. 21 as crypto futures trading increased alongside a rebound in Asian technology shares. The timing does not show that the stock gains caused the move in crypto prices.
For the rolling 24-hour period measured in the Wednesday morning snapshot, crypto futures volume reached $190 billion, a 19% increase. Open interest, which tracks contracts that remain active, rose nearly 4% to $145 billion. Liquidations totaled $284 million, up 76%.
The volume and open-interest changes describe different parts of derivatives trading. Volume counts contracts traded during a period; open interest measures contracts still outstanding. The aggregate figures do not reveal how many contracts were newly opened versus closed during the period.
Taker volume had a modest long tilt, with about 53% on the long side and 47% on the short side. That split describes the reported taker activity; it does not determine the direction of the wider market.
In the same 24-hour comparison, BTC gained 2.6% and its futures open interest rose 3%. Ether (ETH) advanced 3.35%, while its open interest increased 2%. Those asset-level readings provide a separate comparison from the broader futures-volume and open-interest totals.
The market snapshot also placed the crypto gains alongside a recovery in Asian technology shares. The two moves occurred during the same period, but timing alone does not establish a cause. The figures cover a moving window, so they should not be read as a tally of all trading or liquidations on Oct. 21.
