Some investors see Apple as a way to maintain technology exposure while relying less on the AI infrastructure trade during market volatility. The recent divergence from chip stocks has drawn attention to Apple as a possible counterweight, though the trading pattern has reversed before.

Apple gained 2% in the week ended Oct. 16. Over the same period, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell more than 11%, while a Magnificent Seven stock index declined 3.1%.

Apple’s 40-day correlation with the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has been negative since early July, reaching its most extreme level in data going back to 1994. That measure describes how the two moved relative to each other over the period; it does not establish that they will continue moving in opposite directions.

“Apple is a flight to safety when the market gets nervous,” said Jordan McCall, senior portfolio manager at Russell Investments.

Apple generated $116.996 billion in operating cash flow during the nine months ended June 27, 2026. In its fiscal third quarter, it repurchased $25.8 billion in common stock and paid $4 billion in dividends and dividend equivalents. The company’s installed base exceeded 2.5 billion active devices in results for the quarter ended Dec. 27, 2025.

The trading relationship has not been consistent. In August, optimism about AI lifted Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet while Apple lagged. The recent performance offers a snapshot of how Apple and AI-linked stocks moved during one volatile stretch, rather than evidence of a dependable hedge.
