Global hedge funds increased equity shorts in October, pushing short leverage to the 99th percentile of its five-year range and leaving the crowded trade exposed to a possible squeeze.

Since October began, short trading has run at about five times the level of long buying. The gap shows how heavily trading has leaned toward bearish equity positions. The percentile compares the current short-leverage reading with its own five-year history; it does not count the share of hedge funds holding shorts.

Total leverage has recovered, but net leverage among fundamental long-short funds remains near a three-year low. Net leverage reflects how far long exposure exceeds short exposure. A low reading indicates that this group has less net long exposure, even as its total leverage has rebounded.

A sentiment shift backed by a catalyst could prompt a rapid unwinding of crowded short positions. In a squeeze, short sellers buy shares to close positions, adding buying pressure that can intensify a market reversal.
