U.S. underground natural gas inventories rose 77 billion cubic feet to 3,644 Bcf for the week ended Friday, Oct. 16, leaving stocks below last year’s level but above the five-year average.

Inventories were 152 Bcf, or 4%, below the year-earlier total of 3,796 Bcf. They were 35 Bcf, or 1%, above the 2021–2025 average of 3,609 Bcf. Inventory was still inside the range recorded over the previous five years.

The increase followed the prior week’s 67-Bcf build, which brought inventories to 3,567 Bcf. Regional net changes were increases of 28 Bcf each in the Midwest and South Central regions, 16 Bcf in the East, 3 Bcf in the Pacific and 2 Bcf in the Mountain region.

The weekly net change reflects injections, withdrawals and reclassifications between base gas and working gas. The Energy Information Administration (EIA) released the figures Thursday, Oct. 22, at 10:30 a.m. ET (14:30 UTC).
