A crypto whale held $51.56 million in crude-linked long positions with about $1.9 million in unrealized gains as oil rose Friday, Oct. 23.

The trader had exited an Ether (ETH) position three days earlier, after buying at $1,647 and selling for an $8.99 million profit. The crude exposure was divided between $30.78 million in CL contracts and $20.78 million in BRENTOIL contracts.

Oil prices climbed about 4% on Oct. 23. A long position is structured to gain when the price it tracks rises, so the increase coincided with the paper gains on the contracts.

The $1.9 million remained an unrealized figure, meaning a gain shown while a position is open rather than profit completed through a closing trade. The earlier Ether profit, by contrast, was realized when the whale sold. The crude positions were worth nearly six times the profit from the Ether sale.
