Global credit spreads reached a 17-month high amid investor concerns about artificial intelligence and geopolitical tensions, alongside a shift toward Treasury securities, other bonds and gold.

Credit spreads measure the extra yield investors demand to hold corporate debt instead of government bonds. Wider spreads reflect demand for more compensation for credit risk.

The market shift came as investors moved away from riskier assets and toward investments generally viewed as safer.

The move contrasts with the earlier credit backdrop. By June 17, the four biggest technology companies had borrowed more than $170 billion in corporate debt during 2026, already exceeding their total for 2025. At the time, credit spreads were at record lows. Earlier coverage of Big Tech borrowing and narrow spreads described how heavy debt issuance was testing the market’s capacity to absorb new supply.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that a further slowdown in AI investment could affect markets more broadly. Indicators to watch include AI investment activity, announcements from major AI companies, geopolitical tensions and developments in AI regulation.
