Brazil’s Bank and Commodity Weights Set Indexes Apart Ahead of Runoff
Domestic banks and commodity producers make up sizable portions of the MSCI Brazil Index and Ibovespa, but that mix alone does not establish a hedge against AI-linked stocks.

Brazil’s main stock indexes have sizable exposure to domestic banks and commodity producers, giving them business drivers distinct from AI spending as the country approaches its Oct. 25 presidential runoff. That sector mix provides context for Brazilian equities, but does not establish that they hedge against losses in AI-linked stocks.
Domestic banks and commodity producers make up sizable portions of both the MSCI Brazil Index and Ibovespa. Their presence distinguishes the indexes’ sector profile from stocks tied to artificial intelligence (AI) spending. The mix alone does not show that Brazilian shares move opposite to AI-linked equities or cushion declines in them.
Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva advanced to the runoff after the Oct. 4 first round. At 11:11 p.m. ET that night, with 99.99% of ballot boxes counted, Bolsonaro had 47.03% of valid votes and Lula had 45.16%.
