[Wall Street liquidity radar] Bitcoin futures and spot signal caution as institutional trading slows
Short-heavy CME positioning, a negative Coinbase premium and weaker institutional trading point to caution in the U.S. Bitcoin market as the VIX and dollar rise.

U.S. Bitcoin indicators point to a defensive market stance. Leveraged funds hold more short than long futures contracts, U.S. spot prices remain at a discount, and trading through an institutional venue has fallen sharply.
The U.S. spot discount narrowed slightly, but weaker institutional trading and short-heavy futures positioning provide limited evidence of a recovery in buying appetite.
CME leveraged funds held 5,466 long contracts and 10,408 short contracts as of October 20. The CFTC publishes these positions weekly, so the figures can lag current market conditions by several days.
The positioning shows more contracts on the short side than the long side, consistent with a defensive stance. However, short positions can also hedge other investments and do not necessarily represent outright bets on falling prices.
The Coinbase premium stood at -0.13% on October 24. Recent readings were -0.11% on October 20, -0.08% on October 21, -0.13% on October 22 and -0.14% on October 23. The October 24 reading showed a slightly narrower discount than the previous day.

A positive premium means Bitcoin trades at a higher price on Coinbase than on Binance; a negative reading indicates a discount. The persistently negative readings suggest relatively subdued U.S. spot buying pressure.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded volume of 4,959.79 BTC on October 23, down sharply from 7,296.83 BTC on October 22. Separately, its reported 24-hour dollar trading volume was approximately $381.75 million.
Executed volume offers a measure of institutional trading activity. The decline indicates reduced participation, but volume includes both buying and selling and does not establish that institutions were net sellers.
The VIX rose to 19.45 on October 23 from 19.03 on October 22, an increase of 0.42. It had risen for two consecutive days after reaching 16.68 on October 21.

The index measures expected volatility in U.S. equities. Its rise points to greater uncertainty and adds a cautious backdrop for risk assets, including Bitcoin.
The dollar index rose to 101.81 on October 23 from 101.61 the previous day, an increase of 0.20. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.96% as of October 22. A firmer dollar and elevated yields add to the constraints on risk appetite.
Together, the indicators suggest U.S. Bitcoin participants remain focused on managing risk. A sustained narrowing of the spot discount alongside renewed institutional trading would provide clearer evidence of improving buying appetite.
