[Wall Street liquidity radar] Institutional Bitcoin trading surges, but US prices remain at a discount
Coinbase Prime volume rose to 6,770 BTC from 2,097 BTC, while the Coinbase premium remained negative. Easing volatility contrasted with heavier short positioning in CME leveraged-fund futures.

Institutional Bitcoin trading increased sharply, but US spot prices remained below overseas levels, leaving evidence of stronger buying demand inconclusive. Easing equity-market volatility offered some relief, while trading activity and directional conviction continued to send different signals.
On October 27, the Coinbase premium stood at -0.07% in the daily series, compared with -0.18% on October 26. The latest five daily readings were -0.14%, -0.15%, -0.13%, -0.18% and -0.07%. A separate live reading on October 27 showed a premium of -0.18%.
A positive premium indicates that Bitcoin trades at a higher price on Coinbase than on Binance; a negative reading indicates a discount. The daily series showed a narrower discount, but its persistently negative readings did not establish a US buying premium.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 6,770 BTC in trading volume on October 26, up from 2,097 BTC on October 25. Its dollar-denominated trading volume over 24 hours was approximately $378.02 million.
The increase points to greater institutional participation in executed trades. Volume includes both purchases and sales, however, so the increase alone does not establish that institutions were accumulating Bitcoin.
CFTC disclosures showed that leveraged funds in CME Bitcoin futures held 5,466 long contracts and 10,408 short contracts as of October 20. Short positions exceeded long positions. These figures are published weekly and therefore reflect an earlier positioning snapshot.
The VIX volatility index fell to 17.88 on October 27 from 18.39 on October 26, a decline of 0.51 points.

The decline indicated easing expectations of US equity-market volatility, offering a less unsettled backdrop for crypto sentiment. It did not, by itself, establish stronger Bitcoin demand.
The dollar index rose 0.26 points on October 27, with its level rounding to 102. The US 10-year Treasury yield stood at 5.00% as of October 23. A firmer dollar and elevated yields remained a potentially restrictive backdrop for risk assets such as Bitcoin.
The indicators together suggest increased institutional trading alongside continued caution toward Bitcoin. Sustained activity at Coinbase Prime and a resolution of the US spot discount would provide clearer evidence of whether participation is translating into buying demand.
Editor's note: Wall Street liquidity radar examines US Bitcoin sentiment through four indicators: leveraged-fund positioning in CME futures, the Coinbase spot premium, VIX volatility and trading volume at Coinbase Prime. Together, they provide context for short-term market conditions and investor appetite.
