Goldman Sachs Ties Semiconductor Exposure to 54% of Return Gaps

The three-week estimate put oil-price exposure at 2%. Goldman Sachs cautioned that the short window does not establish a lasting market relationship.

Semiconductor-stock exposure accounted for about 54% of the variation in returns among asset classes over a three-week period in a Goldman Sachs estimate. Oil-price exposure accounted for 2% in the same calculation.

Goldman Sachs’ risk-appetite gauge fell to its lowest level since April 2025 after worries about AI investment returns, financing costs and capital spending pressured technology shares and corporate bonds last week.

South Korea’s KOSPI closed up 3.1% Tuesday. SK Hynix gained 5.2%, while Samsung Electronics rose 4.2%. The index’s heavy semiconductor weighting makes it sensitive to changing global expectations for AI investment.

Goldman Sachs cautioned that the short-window relationship does not show AI will determine market performance over the long term. Oil remains relevant to inflation, monetary policy and asset pricing. Investors are watching upcoming results from Microsoft, Google and Amazon for signs of AI demand growth and whether large capital outlays are translating into profits.
