Tech Stocks Retreat as AI Debt Financing Tops $500 Billion
Hyperscale cloud companies' financing costs have risen about 120 basis points, while technology volatility pricing reached the 98th percentile of its five-year range.

About $20 billion in net selling hit global technology stocks over two weeks, and AI infrastructure debt financing topped $500 billion this year.
The latest roughly $20 billion in net selling across technology, media and telecom (TMT) stocks was close to July's roughly $23 billion in TMT net selling. The S&P 500 has fallen about 2.4% in the latest pullback, compared with 3.4% in July.
The volatility premium is concentrated in technology. The spread between Nasdaq-100 and S&P 500 volatility reached the 98th percentile of its five-year range, a measure of unusually expensive technology volatility pricing relative to the broader market. It does not measure realized stock swings.
TMT fundamental net exposure reached a year low, while total exposure remained at the 63rd percentile. This week's earnings from Google, Microsoft and Amazon put cloud spending and financing in focus. Investors are watching whether existing orders convert into revenue and how the companies will fund another round of investment. The questions extend an earlier TokenPost report on AI spending and S&P 500 earnings growth.
Financial ties between Nvidia and its GPU customers could provide a route for credit pressure to spread. GPU operators such as CoreWeave rely on customer financing and credit support to expand; tighter funding for those operators could transmit pressure to upstream suppliers.
Technology exports account for nearly 20% of South Korea's gross domestic product, a concentration that could expose Asian export economies to a sharp pullback in AI capital spending. A sharp reduction in AI capital spending could ease inflation pressure, give the Federal Reserve more room to cut interest rates and potentially support rate-sensitive sectors such as real estate.
Financing strain among neocloud operators and questions about whether semiconductor valuations can be sustained remain risks. The earnings reports from Google, Microsoft and Amazon this week are the next near-term test of cloud spending plans and funding needs.
