[Wall Street liquidity radar] Bitcoin shorts outnumber longs 1.7 to 1 as institutional trading rises
CME Bitcoin shorts outnumbered longs 1.7 to 1, while Coinbase remained at a discount. Coinbase Prime trading volume rose 38.1%, but heavier activity alone does not establish stronger buying conviction.

U.S. crypto indicators point to caution about downside risk, with short positions outweighing longs and Bitcoin trading at a discount on Coinbase. Higher institutional trading volume has yet to establish a clear recovery in buying conviction.
Institutional activity has increased sharply, but U.S. spot pricing remains below offshore levels. The combination leaves open whether heavier trading reflects stronger demand.
CME leveraged funds held 5,887 long Bitcoin futures contracts and 9,866 short contracts as of October 27, according to CFTC disclosures. Shorts outnumbered longs by 1.7 to 1.
The positioning shows more contracts on the short side, although some may hedge other exposures rather than express an outright bearish view. The CFTC releases the figures weekly, so the positioning snapshot can be several days old.
The latest Coinbase premium reading on October 31 was -0.19%. Daily readings were negative throughout the latest five days: -0.14% on October 27, -0.12% on October 28, -0.27% on October 29, -0.24% on October 30 and -0.19% on October 31.

A positive premium indicates Bitcoin trades at a higher price on Coinbase than on Binance; a negative reading indicates a discount. That discount has narrowed recently, but its persistence offers little confirmation of stronger U.S. buying pressure.
Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 13,721.60 BTC in trading volume on October 30, up 38.1% from 9,933.73 BTC on October 29. Its dollar-denominated 24-hour trading volume was approximately $366.73 million.
The increase signals greater institutional trading activity. Volume includes both purchases and sales, however, so it does not by itself establish net institutional inflows or stronger bullish conviction.
The VIX rose to 19.42 on October 30 from 17.20 on October 29, an increase of 2.22 points. It advanced for a second consecutive day from 16.91 on October 28.

The index measures expected volatility in U.S. equities. Its rise suggests greater investor caution, adding context to the subdued signal from U.S. Bitcoin spot pricing.
The dollar index declined to 101.88 on October 30 from 102.04 the previous day, a fall of 0.16 points. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.98% as of October 29. The softer dollar eased one potential pressure on risk assets, while Treasury yields remained part of the broader market backdrop.
Together, the indicators suggest caution about downside risk despite increased institutional activity. Whether the Coinbase discount closes and the short-position imbalance narrows in the next futures disclosure will help clarify whether that activity is accompanied by stronger buying conviction.
[Editor's note] Wall Street liquidity radar examines four indicators of U.S. Bitcoin sentiment: CME leveraged-fund positioning, the Coinbase premium, the VIX and Coinbase Prime trading volume. Together, they provide context for short-term market conditions and institutional activity.
