Berkshire Class B Shares Gain 8.9% in October as Major Indexes Fall

Berkshire Hathaway’s Class B shares gained 8.9% from the Sept. 30 close through Oct. 30, outperforming the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite despite ending the month’s final week little changed.

Class B closed at $497.95 on Sept. 30 and $542.49 on Oct. 30. Over the same period, the S&P 500 fell about 0.9%, from 7,651.54 to 7,580.07, while the Nasdaq Composite slid about 5.3%, from 26,861.06 to 25,437. Those comparisons use closing levels on the two dates and measure price changes, not total returns.

Berkshire’s two share classes set closing records on Oct. 22, then retreated in the next session. On Oct. 23, Class A fell 0.84% to $813,595, while Class B lost 0.87% to close at $542.19. Both classes set closing records again on Oct. 26: Class A finished at $821,931 and Class B at $548.56. The new marks followed the Oct. 22 record-setting session. The Oct. 26 closes also stood above the previous closing records set May 2, 2025, of $809,350 for Class A and $539.80 for Class B.

Class B reached $550.47 during the Oct. 30 session, topping its previous intraday high of $549.96 from Oct. 22. The new session high did not carry through to the close: Class B finished at $542.49, below its Oct. 26 closing record. Class A ended Oct. 30 at $815,600. Its session high of $822,929 remained below its Oct. 22 intraday high of $824,765.

From the Oct. 23 close through Oct. 30, Class A rose about 0.25%, from $813,595 to $815,600. Class B gained about 0.06%, moving from $542.19 to $542.49. The weekly changes were small compared with Class B’s full-month advance, which held even as both major indexes declined over the month.
