US crypto indicators point to cautious buying interest, with Coinbase Prime trading volume falling 82.2% and Bitcoin continuing to trade at a discount on Coinbase. The combination offers limited evidence of a recovery in US demand.

The US price discount narrowed, but institutional trading activity fell sharply. Together, the readings suggest that cheaper US prices have yet to coincide with stronger participation through the institutional venue.

The latest Coinbase premium reading on November 1 was -0.18%. The daily series also stood at -0.18%, compared with -0.20% on October 31. Over the preceding days, it moved from -0.12% on October 28 to -0.27% on October 29, then -0.24% on October 30.

A negative premium means Bitcoin trades at a lower price on Coinbase than on Binance. The measure remained negative throughout the five-day period, suggesting relatively subdued US buying demand despite the recent narrowing of the discount.

Coinbase Prime, an institutional trading venue, recorded 2,436.10 BTC in volume on October 31, down 82.2% from 13,721.60 BTC on October 30. Separately, its reported 24-hour dollar trading volume was approximately $368.41 million.

Trading volume measures completed activity at the venue. A decline alone does not establish that sellers dominate, but alongside the US price discount it provides little confirmation of strong institutional participation.

CFTC disclosures showed leveraged funds holding 5,887 long contracts and 9,866 short contracts in CME Bitcoin futures as of October 27. Shorts were roughly 1.7 times longs. The positions are reported weekly and therefore reflect an earlier snapshot.

The VIX rose to 19.42 on October 30 from 17.20 on October 29, an increase of 2.22 points. That extended its rise from 16.91 on October 28.

The VIX measures expected fluctuations in US equities, with 20 commonly treated as a rough dividing line between calmer and more unsettled conditions. Its approach toward that level suggests greater caution in equities, a backdrop that can also weigh on crypto buying.

The dollar index, which tracks the dollar against major currencies, fell 0.16 to 101.88 on October 30 from 102.04 the previous day. The US 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.98% on October 29. The softer dollar eased one potential constraint on risk assets, while the yield level remained a challenging backdrop.

Overall, the indicators suggest caution rather than a broad expansion in US crypto buying. A sustained narrowing of the Coinbase discount alongside a recovery in institutional trading volume would provide stronger evidence of improving participation.

[Editor's note] Wall Street liquidity radar examines four indicators of US Bitcoin investor sentiment: leveraged-fund positioning in CME futures, the Coinbase premium, the VIX and Coinbase Prime trading volume. Together, they offer a view of futures positioning, relative spot demand, equity-market uncertainty and institutional trading activity.
