Short Interest Across Nasdaq Securities Totaled 23.16 Billion Shares

Nasdaq published a mid-month short-interest total of 23,156,400,993 shares across 5,544 Nasdaq securities, measured at the Oct. 15 settlement date. The figure is an aggregate for Nasdaq securities, and the positions include short sales reported by broker-dealers regardless of exchange affiliation.

Short interest is a periodic snapshot of reported positions, distinct from daily short-sale volume. FINRA requires firms to report short positions twice a month, with filings due by 6 p.m. ET on the second business day after each designated settlement date.
